Provisioning in Puerto Vallarta before you go off-grid

There are no shops where you are going. Every bungalow has a private kitchen, so what you eat for the week is what you carry onto the boat — plus whatever Chimo can send over. Here is how to get it right.

The short answer

Provision in Puerto Vallarta the night before you cross. Between the local market shops and the big retailers — Walmart, Costco, Soriana, La Comer — the city has everything. Pack perishables in a cooler or cooler bags for the hour on the water, and bring more pesos than you think you need — there are no ATMs and no card machines at Los Chonchos or in Chimo.

Questions people ask

How much food should I bring? +

Everything you intend to eat, plus a margin. Chimo covers gaps, not plans.

Is there drinking water? +

Yes. The tap water is gravity-fed mountain spring water, tested clean. Every bungalow also has a five-gallon jug of filtered drinking water on a dispenser — one is included in the rate, and each additional jug is 200 pesos.

Can I buy alcohol there? +

Nothing is sold at Los Chonchos. Bring what you want from Puerto Vallarta, or have cold beer brought over from Chimo by boat.

What if I forget something? +

Ask the staff before you go without — there is often something they can lend you. Otherwise the two stores in Chimo cover a few basics, and beyond that you manage.

Six bungalows, one coastline.

The rate is the same all year, so booking early costs you nothing and gets you the months everybody wants.
